POSITIONING OF IVORY COAST AS A LEADER IN THE SUBREGIONAL ELECTRICITY MARKET : THE MILLENNIUM CHALLENGE CORPORATION ENGAGES
Ivory Coast aims to position itself as the leader in the regional electricity market in West Africa. In recent months, things have been solidifying for the realization of this project, through the signing of a funding agreement between the Millennium Challenge Corporation and the Ivorian Government in January 2023.
This partnership between the two parties aims to jointly develop a Regional Energy Compact.
As part of the development process of this Compact, Mrs. GUEYE ISSIE YVONNE, in her capacity as National Coordinator of the Technical Cell for the Formulation of the Regional Compact Program (CFPCR-MCC), visited the MCC headquarters in Washington from October 13 to 23, 2023.
The main objective of this mission was to promote collaboration and the exchange of experiences between the CFPCR-MCC and the MCC, necessary steps for the formulation of the Energy Compact.
This mission revolved around courtesy meetings and exchanges (Meet & Greet), as well as working sessions with the Governance teams and experts for sharing experiences and strengthening skills. The work addressed several questions that were the subject of surveys already sent to the legal expert of the CFPCR, and whose responses must be officially validated.
The discussions also related to the work to be considered for the coordination team:
- Discussions on the indicators for measuring the stages.
- Define the data sources and evaluate their data.
This mission at the MCC headquarters was very enriching for the National Coordinator, who emphasized, ‘it allowed me to get to know the main leaders of the various departments involved in the Energy Compact development process, thus laying the foundation for fruitful collaboration.’ The various meetings and working sessions provided an opportunity to learn about best practices, particularly in strategic project management.
At the end of this mission, the Representative of the Ivorian Government wished to express her sincere thanks to all the individuals who made her stay enjoyable in the land of Uncle SAM, notably the Vice Presidents, Ms. Kim KYEH, Ms. Katerina NTEP, and Mr. Richart JONATHAN, as well as Ms. Alicia ROBINSON-MORGAN, General Director for Francophone Africa, for their valuable advice; Mr. Michael SIMSIK, Head of the MCC Regional Compact Energy team, for organizing this platform for meetings and exchanges; and especially the Ivorian Ambassador to the USA for his encouragement and support in the continuation of the project.
